Went there for the first time to get my bird groomed. We booked an appointment the day before. The staff was very welcoming and warm. Krista, who helped with the grooming is very knowledgeable, she patiently answered all our questions, even held my over-anxious bird with a lot of care. Gave us many tips! While doing the beak n nails, she went very slow and used a drill instead of clippers, so that she can stop n check whenever she wants.
Prices are very reasonable, only $20 for wings, beak n nail for a cockateil.
We later visited the store, its huge n has a few pet birds, fishes, and reptiles for sale. I felt the prices for animal supplies n the pets were slightly on the higher side, but I guess thats typical in a store. I 100% would recommend this place for any pet owners
My boyfriend has been coming to Big Al's for a long time and has recieved excellent serviced every time and this past weekend was no exception. We have a 7 month old ball python hatchling who hasn't been eating and showing no interest in food since we bought him in January. Worried that he might be losing weight, we talked to Star, one of the amazing employees at Big Al's. She is super knowledgeable and advised us on how to feed the little guy and help stimulate interest in food. She also offered to help us feed him if he refused to eat on Friday night. He refused so we brought him into the store on Sunday and the incredible Star was able to get him to eat a pinky. She also gave us lots more advce and tips on how to entice him to eat, how often and showed us how to force feed if necessary. She really knows her stuff and is super friendly and helpful. We will continue to take her advice and hopefully little Thorin will start eating like a champ. Thanks again for everything, Star! You're amazing! We will definitely be back!
Great place to shop for all your fishy friends needs. Weekly sales are excellent value. There are reptiles and birds too. Service is good. Fish are healthy and tanks are clean.

This place is the fish place to go in Hamilton.
Unique layout, great selection of all things small pets/dogs, ideal for koi in spring. Staff always helpful. Reward points. Hope they’re able to reopen soon!
Incredible team, very patient and knowledgeable. I apologize for not remembering names, but the young cashier, the owner and the while reptile department team have been very good to me while I've lived in Hamilton. I regularly get reptile supplies, and frozen feeders here for a great price. Thank you so much for helping me with my reward points!

I’ve always wondered — and honestly worried — that one day Big Al’s might close down. We went through Covid, and then their neighbouring store had a fire that destroyed the building and killed fish. I’m not sure if any other pets were lost, but I was extremely relieved to see Rosco was okay when they reopened this week.
I have 4 snakes, 5 lizards, and a bird. For us, Big Al’s is as essential as a pharmacy is to anyone else. They hire Canadians (which I truly appreciate), and their staff are always kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring.
During Covid and after the fire, they stayed open for the essentials. The owners and staff adapted to every challenge. They could have easily closed and relied on insurance for any loss, I'm sure, but they understood how important they were to the community. They stayed open so people could still get what they needed to house and feed their pets.
I’ve been a customer since they opened 27 years ago, and I honestly can’t thank them enough.

I have had a lot of trouble in the past finding a bird groomer who was competent, experienced and compassionate. I am pleased to announce that the search is over!
Krista is amazing. Not only is she knowledgeable and experienced, she treated my Charlie as if he was her own.
Having a bird groomer who is calm and kind leads to birds with less fear and stress which is so important for our feathered friends.
10/10 We will be coming back to Krista again and again for such an amazing service.

we bought a baby budgie named kiwi. he is amazing. he was easy to tame. all the workers were super friendly and they had a store pet named alex. he is a grey macaw and can say pew pew and hello.
