Finding a Breeder

How to Verify a Breeder's Reputation

Don't take a breeder's word for it. Here's how to independently verify their claims, reputation, and the quality of their breeding program.

Check Health Testing Databases

All legitimate health testing results are recorded in searchable databases. OFA results are available at ofa.org by searching the dog's registered name or number. PennHIP results can be verified through their online database. DNA test results from companies like Embark or Wisdom Panel can be shared digitally with a unique verification link.

If a breeder claims health testing but can't provide verifiable results, that's a significant red flag. Legitimate results have certification numbers, testing dates, and can be independently confirmed. Don't accept photocopied certificates without verification — they can be fabricated.

Contact References and Previous Buyers

A reputable breeder should willingly provide references from their veterinarian, breed club mentors, and previous puppy buyers. Contact these references and ask specific questions: How is the dog's health? Did the breeder stay in contact? Would they buy from this breeder again? Were there any surprises or concerns?

Also search online for the breeder's name, kennel name, and any listed business name. Look for reviews, forum discussions, and social media mentions. Breed-specific Facebook groups and forums often have candid discussions about breeders that you won't find on their own website.

Visit the Facility In Person

Nothing replaces an in-person visit. Observe the living conditions, meet the breeding dogs, and watch how the breeder interacts with their animals. Healthy, well-socialized dogs will be friendly and comfortable around their breeder. Nervous, fearful, or aggressive behaviour from the adults may indicate poor treatment or inadequate socialization.

Look at the overall setup: Is it clean and well-maintained? Do the dogs have adequate space, enrichment, and outdoor access? Are puppies raised in the home with family exposure? The physical environment tells you more about a breeder's practices than any conversation or website ever could.

Using Online Reviews and Directories

Online review platforms provide valuable peer feedback about breeders. Check Google reviews, Facebook recommendations, and breed-specific directories for ratings and comments. On LocalPetReviews, you can find ratings for breeders listed in our directory, aggregated from multiple review platforms for a comprehensive view.

Be aware that some breeders solicit positive reviews from happy buyers while negative experiences go unreported. Weight the volume and consistency of reviews alongside the content. A breeder with 50+ consistently positive reviews over several years is likely legitimate, while a handful of reviews — even if all positive — provides less confidence.
